A research prize has been created to honour researchers at LNE and at laboratories in the French metrology network. The first such prize was awarded on 29 September 2009, to André Clairon, a research engineer at LNE-SYRTE (Time-Space Reference Systems) at the Observatoire de Paris.

European metrology passed a first milestone on 22 April 2009 when the European Parliament voted to support the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP), under Article 169, to the tune of €200 million over a seven-year period. Some €20 million of this sum will be allocated to the French metrology network.
Luc Erard, president of the EMRP, and Leslie Pendriell, president of EURAMET, will sign the €200M contract with the European Commission before the end of 2009.
Beyond this financing, the EMRP will have a major impact on Europe's metrology research as a whole, both in the allocation of research subjects (coordinated by LNE) and in the management of metrology research at European level.
A first invitation to tender concerning energy will be launched in mid-May 2009.
On 23 April 2009, the national metrology laboratories of France (LNE), Germany (PTB) and Brazil (Inmetro) signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in metrology of biofuels.
The three signatories undertake to perform joint research for a period of two years (in the context of possible EU financing under Article 169), in the field of energy properties, chemical characterization of biofuels, and effects on materials in contact with biofuels. The first joint research work, focusing on chemical characterization of biofuels, will begin in the second half of 2009.
On 22 April 2009, LNE Managing Director Jean-Luc Laurent welcomed Myungsoo Kim, President of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), along with his colleagues Sangwook Seo and Hun-Young So.
In the presence of Luc Erard, head of Scientific and Technical Research at LNE, and Sophie Vaslin, head of chemistry-biology in LNE's scientific and industrial metrology centre, LNE and KRISS signed a memorandum of understanding for scientific cooperation in the fields of chemistry, nanoparticles, energy, and metrology of time and frequency.
Within the framework of EURAMET, a meeting of experts in quantum electrical metrology will be held at the LNE in June 3rd to 5th, 2009.
Organized every two years, this event will gather around fifty experts, most of them coming from Europe but also from other countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, USA, ... .
Numerous results and progress reports will be presented. They will particularly concern the four on-going European joint research projects (JRPs) relative to quantum electrical metrology (REUNIAM, JOSY, ULQHE et NANOSPIN).
Satellite meetings dedicated to those four JRPs and restricted to experts direclty concerned, will be held on June, 2nd and 5th afternoon.
A tour of some laboratories in Trappes, Maxwell building is also planned on June, 3rd afternoon.
The Watt Balance Technical Meeting (WBTM) periodically gathers experts from National Metrology Laboratories envolved in watt balance experiments, in view to contribute to a possible new definition of the mass unit. The WBTM is a thematic meeting dealing, at each of its sessions, with various points specific to this kind of experiment.
For the second time, LNE organizes this event (March 2009, 16th- 18th) that will be attended by more than thirty metrologists from seven different countries. This place of exchange will allow, this year, to go through various topics such as metrology of masses under vacuum, velocity measurements by means of interferometers, optical and mechanical methods for the alignment of experimental devices, gravimetry, watt balances traceability...
The meeting will end by a visit of the LNE and the BIPM laboratories.
The 14th International Metrology Congress will be held in Paris (Palais des Congrès, Porte Maillot) from 22 to 25 June 2009.
The aim of the Congress is to :
The congress will feature presentations of papers, sessions where participants can discuss specific topics with specialists, and six round tables.
The following themes will be covered :
Proposals are now invited for conference papers. A form is provided on the Congress website.
Please note that proposals must be received no later than 20 September 2008.
New feature : An award will be presented for the best conference paper.
